RPI R users are invited to the November 2024 meeting of RPIrates: The RPI R Users Group! Our topic on Weds, 30 Oct (6p, AE217) will be "Linux Shell Expansion for R Dummies," led by Dr. John Erickson, Director of Research Operations of the Future of Computing Institute (FOCI) at Rensselaer and Chief Instigator of RPIrates.

Stepping into the Land of Linux is unavoidable for serious data analysts, and a mastery of the Linux command line is a definite superpower.  Shell expansion is a powerful feature that empowers users to generate complex commands and manipulate data efficiently.  With shell expansion, the shell interprets and replaces certain expressions before executing a command, allowing users to write more concise and flexible commands on the command line or in shell scripts, automating repetitive tasks and handling complex file operations with ease.

A great way to demonstrate this functionality is the echo command, a simple yet versatile tool that helps us visualize how expansion works in practice.  In this informal but comprehensive overview, we’ll explore the ins and outs of shell expansion, with a particular focus on how the echo command interacts with various types of expansions.

Whether you’re just starting out or looking to solidify your understanding, this RPIrates discussion will start you on your way to leveraging shell expansion effectively in your data analytics journey!

RPIrates is a growing community of students, faculty and staff at Rensselaer who gather monthly to support each others' use of the R open source analytics platform. During the Fall and Spring semesters we have monthly in-person RPIrates meetings, usually the first Weds evening of the month. RPIrates also has an email list through which we share information and ask questions: rpi-r-users@cs.lists.rpi.edu

During the Fall 2024 term we will be holding monthly RPIrates meetings at 6p in AE217, featuring great topics, plus pizza, salad and other goodies (arriving at 5:30p).
