The February 2025 meeting of RPIrates: The RPI R Users Group

RPI R users are invited to the February 2025 meeting of RPIrates: The RPI R Users Group! Our topic on Weds, 29 Jan (6p, AE217) will be "Put Your Data on Maps with Leaflet in R!," led by Dr. John Erickson, Director of Research Operations of the Future of Computing Institute (FOCI) at Rensselaer and Chief Instigator of RPIrates.

Leaflet is the leading open-source JavaScript library for mobile-friendly interactive maps, packed with all the mapping features most developers ever need. Leaflet is designed with simplicity, performance and usability in mind. It works efficiently across all major desktop and mobile platforms, can be extended with lots of plugins, has a beautiful, easy to use and well-documented API and a simple, readable source code that is a joy to contribute to.

The Leaflet package for R makes it very easy for R users to create interactive maps that present their data analyses in powerful, compelling, geographically-relevant ways. In this talk John will review the basics of including Leaflet-based maps in R notebooks and Shiny apps, and then will demonstrate how Leaflet has been used in a variety of map-based applications created by the Data INCITE program, including demos on the RPI Campfire.

Users can download the Leaflet Cheatsheet for R here.

RPIrates is a growing community of students, faculty and staff at Rensselaer who gather monthly to support each others' use of the R open source analytics platform. During the Fall and Spring semesters we have monthly in-person RPIrates meetings, usually the first Weds evening of the month. RPIrates also has an email list through which we share information and ask questions: rpi-r-users@cs.lists.rpi.edu

During the Spring 2025 term we will be holding monthly RPIrates meetings at 6p in AE217, featuring great topics, plus pizza, salad and other goodies (arriving at 5:30p).
