RPI R users are invited to the March 2025 meeting of RPIrates: The RPI R Users Group! Our topic on Weds, 12 Mar (6p, AE217) will be "Ready for Prime Time: How to Deploy Shiny Apps!" led by Dr. John Erickson, Director of Research Operations for the Future of Computing Institute (FOCI) at Rensselaer and Chief Instigator of RPIrates.

Shiny is a framework for developing web apps in R and, since 2022, also in Python. Since 2018 students and staff with the Rensselaer Data INCITE program have deployed a series of compelling interactive data analytics web apps based on Shiny for public use, including COVIDMINDER, StudySafe, the Cohoes Floating Solar Explorer, and the US HHS award-winning MORTALITYMINDER. Shiny has also been the platform of choice for compelling data-driven apps on the FOCI Campfire, including the recent Mars Data Explorer.

In this talk John will review the structure of Shiny apps in R and Python; will discuss how to deploy apps "locally" using the Rensselaer FOCI Cluster's built-in Shiny server; and will demonstrate how the Docker containerization platform is used with ShinyProxy to publicly deploy a variety of web apps created by the Data INCITE program.

RPIrates is a growing community of students, faculty and staff at Rensselaer who gather monthly to support each others' use of the R open source analytics platform. During the Fall and Spring semesters we have monthly in-person RPIrates meetings, usually the first Weds evening of the month. RPIrates also has an email list through which we share information and ask questions: rpi-r-users@cs.lists.rpi.edu

During the Spring 2025 term we will be holding monthly RPIrates meetings at 6p in AE217, featuring great topics, plus pizza, salad and other goodies (arriving at 5:30p).
